Case Study

BARNET AND SOUTHGATE COLLEGE STUDENTS' QUALIFY FOR BCS WOMEN'S FOOTBALL SQUAD

FOOTBALL students from Barnet and Southgate College have qualified for the BCS (British Colleges Sports) Ladies England squad. Ryah Vyse, aged 19 and Siobhan Wilson, aged 17 successfully completed three phases of rigorous football trials against other UK colleges in order to join the final squad.

Ryah and Siobhan first joined Barnet and Southgate College in September 2010 and both girls are currently working towards completing their BTEC Level 3 in Sports Development. Their studies also combine training at Tottenham Hotspur Foundation (THF) Education and Football Development Centre; using facilities at the College and White Hart Lane Community Sports Centre. The students also receive up to 10 hours of Tottenham Hotspur Academy coaching each week to enhance their football skills. Ryah currently plays for Middlesex County and Tottenham Hotspurs Ladies first team and has been with the club since she was 10 years old. Siobhan plays for Tottenham Hotspurs Ladies under 21's and also played in last year's BCS team.

Approximately 150 students take part in the BCS football trials and this is whittled down to a final team of 22 women. The trials are also attended by football scouts from the UK and USA, Ryah and Siobhan were spotted by them and have since been offered full football scholarships in the USA to start as soon as they finish their College course at the end of this year.
Barnet and Southgate College Principal Marilyn Hawkins said:
"This is an amazing achievement for Barnet and Southgate College and we are very proud of both football students. Ryah and Siobhan have demonstrated that investing in hard work and training really does pay off, we wish them every success and luck for the BCS matches and for their future career in football, which so far promises to be very bright indeed."
